Middle Temple Hall

Roof Restoration

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Middle Temple Hall is one of London’s most remarkable historic interiors, a Grade I listed masterpiece constructed between 1562 and 1573, renowned for its double hammer beam roof, stained glass, and surviving elements of its original 16th- and 17th-century fabric.

This project focused on the comprehensive repair and conservation of the Hall’s roof structure, including the parapet gutters, tiled roof covering, and the distinctive lantern. As a building of exceptional architectural and archaeological significance and one previously damaged during the Second World War, the works required meticulous planning, sensitive intervention, and rigorous management of hidden historic elements.

IKS played a central role in safeguarding the integrity of the structure by ensuring that all areas of potential decay, weakness, or concealed features were fully understood before any fabric was disturbed. This careful, informed approach helped protect the Hall’s heritage while enabling essential repairs to be delivered efficiently and responsibly.

  • Implementation of a robust Change Control system, maintaining full commercial oversight throughout all stages.

  • Use of IKS’s Smartsheet-based collaborative platform to track, quantify, and cost design changes in real time.

  • Transparent, up-to-date cost visibility for the client, project manager, and full design team, enabling confident and timely decision-making.
